P4 Blog News for this week

The last slog!

Reports are in polypockets this week, along with a million other bits and bobs!

N.B. Our ticket group have sent out info about the show, and they need a response by Tuesday. Don’t lose this slip amongst all the rest as we need to get numbers. Thank you!

We are super proud this week of all the children in our talented class who went to the Baillie Cup. They are all going to bring medals in on Monday so I can put a picture of their achievements on the blog. Well done you guys, not just for the sports, but for being excellent ambassadors for our school.

Meanwhile, when the others were away, the rest of the class were working on a mystery prop…

We also had auditions for LGT (Lochardil’s Got Talent) and winners will be announced on Monday. We are only allowed two acts per class so choosing will be very difficult! Here are some of our stars.

We have finally settled on a date for our marvellous medieval play (as yet unnamed!) We will be doing two performances on the 27th June. One at 11am and one at 2pm. We will have to restrict numbers to 2 guests per child as we are doing it in the class and the audience is part of the banquet. We will try our hardest to get everyone the time they want. The ticket group will be in contact soon with information on how to order your tickets.

I’m waiting for a good day for taking them for a picnic, so if you are able to be on standby with only a days notice to come with us, could you let me know. Thanks!

We’ve been having fun with weight this week in maths…

Our grand finale for our maths weight lesson, involved technology too. The children had to build a bridge to be judged on strength and ‘elegance.’

Our lovely primary 3/4 neighbours judged the elegance part, and we put increasing weights on to see how much each would hold before it collapsed or dropped the weights.

Our volume activities were great fun BUT foolish teacher gave the camera to two children, who shall remain nameless, to chart the course of the lesson. All the educational joys the children were experiencing, all the fabulous learning…………..etc etc etc.

Had a wee look at their photos……..first they took selfies, and then all their pals! I was nearly crying laughing. So much for my volume lesson. There are about 3 out of the 35 pictures have anything educational! I’ve put them below to give you a laugh!

A quick overview of the final term and the promised photos from Stirling.

In maths we will be continuing to consolidate the work we’ve done this year, as well as volume, weight and venn diagrams. HOWEVER, the best news is, we will be looking at position and movement using the cutest little electronic mouse and coding. We have to program it to find its way through the maze – just like the Rats of Nimh!!

In language we will be writing our own play and also lookng at synonyms, apostrophes and revision of what we’ve covered so far.

Our project will be the aforementioned play that the children are slowly writing. They are going to do the tickets, auditions, costumes, scenery and the food and drink for our audience too!

We’re going to go on a picnic one day too, so stand by for details.

In PE it’s all about racing and field sports.

Here are the photos…

Finally our web problems have been resolved and I can put up our photos from our fantastic trip!

I haven’t put them all up yet as uploading takes 743 years (on average) so I’ll do more next week!

We had such a fun day and the children were angels from start to finish. They really did us all proud. They were one of the most well behaved bunch I have taken away, and even more impressive because it was a very long day. Huge thanks to all helpers and members of staff.

I’m going to try to put the pictures on in some kind of order. If your child didn’t get their pudding from the motorgrill, I’ll get the refund to them as soon as we’ve worked it out. The past few weeks have been very busy and I haven’t got round to it yet but I haven’t forgotten!

We started off in great spirits with Steve the bus driver taking us on our Big Adventure!

We have been waiting to see how many people are willing to come with us and have been overwhelmed by the response! Thank you so much for your kind offers of help. We were thinking of taking everyone who volunteered but there are too many so we are sadly going to have to pick names out of a hat to make it completely fair.  Thank you for your patience with this.

We were busy with a couple of fun events……Science Week organised by our fabulous Miss Butler and parent’s open afternoon.

We had two visitors for Science Week; Mrs Knight came in and told us about the importance of saving water. James was a super helper AND he knew all the answers! The children learned about the Water Cycle, they saturated cotton wool clouds, filtered very dirty water until it was clear and brushed teeth with the tap on…..just to see how much water this wastes.

We also had a visitor from the University of the Highlands and Islands. Mairi showed us the relative distance of the planets from the sun. Each square of toilet paper represents an incredible 60 million km. We were astonished by how far away Pluto and the big gas planets are compared to the 4 rocky planets nearest the sun. Mars is only 4 sheets away! We’re only 3. Pluto is 100!!!!!

Finishing Off Week!

This week was such a short one that we have devoted it to finishing off things and doing the various class jobs that I should have done a while ago! We were looking at:

  • School values

  • Internet safety game for parents Open Afternoon (Thursday 16th March 1:30 – 2:15)

  • A new emotional check-in (they’ve based it on pigs…..don’t ask)

  • A countdown to Stirling

The Wallace Monument is now awaiting its most enthusiastic climbers ever, so that means we are booked up with everyone.

It’s looking like the bus will be 75% funded by the Scottish Government and Stirling Castle is free for April for schools, so it might not be quite as expensive as we thought it was going to be. Information letter to follow soon

Stirling castle is booked and the Ballinluig Motorgrill has been warned! Look out Stirling….Here we come! 4th April so put it in your diary, more info to come soon.

We were transported to China this week thanks to our lovely p6/7 class. They showed us all they had learned about their topic. Very interesting.

Have a fabulous and restful few days off p4!

We were visited this week by a very special visitor. Not a person but a rather fabulous and somewhat unbelievable artifact………..William Wallace’s sword!

A massive thank you to the Cornishes who have made such a huge (literally!) effort for us by making our beautiful replica. Mackenzie was a really good ‘Guardian of the Sword!’ He made sure everyone was sensible when they were handling it AND he put the ball on the tip. You could definitely have someone’s ee oot with that! Great job Mackenzie.

Well we’re going for it!

Thanks to such a positive response from all our lovely parents, we’re going for a bonkers trip to Stirling and back in the same day. Woo hoo! Everyone seemed keen for the children to go, so we are currently reaching unheard of levels of hysteria in primary 4! I will send home details as soon as I’ve worked it all out, but thank you for your enthusiasm.

This week we have started looking at data handling and information display in maths.

We decided that RAW data is just too slow to work with when you’re trying to find something out.

It took 37seconds to answer the question, ‘How many children in primary 4 wear a size 13 shoe?’ when we had our statistics in a big blob mixed up all together.

When we put it in a table and sorted it out……1 second only! The homework should reflect what we were up to in class so if you have any queries, if it doesn’t make sense, just phone or drop me a line! Thanks.

We are also working on very intricate Illuminated Letters in art. It requires great concentration!

Mums are going to like this week’s writing task! Read on…

The children were looking at what metaphors are, and how they really improve your writing. Francesca Simon uses them to great effect when she writes about Horrid Henry transforming into a savage beast when he attacks poor Perfect Peter!

We thought of our mums, and we thought of what we would describe them as if they were an actual object. The children made up the list:

Line 1 – Weather

Line 2 – Dog

Line 3 – sweetie

Line 4 – clothes/accessories

Line 5 – weapon

We’ll be doing one for William Wallace, but in the meantime I thought you’d like to read some of the children’s practice poems about their mums, very sweet!

Mia Haywood wrote:

My mummy is a shiny sun

My mummy is a fluffy chihuahua

My mummy is soft cotton candy

My mummy is a flowery top

My mummy is a shiny sword

Ruairidh’s first line really made me smile!

My Mum

She is a big thunder cloud but with rainbows instead of lightning

She is a big fluffy labrador with a waggy tail

She is a fizzy cherry Haribo dipped in dark chocolate

She is a patchy pair of fluffy socks

She is a dagger with a sugary poison

Jayden wrote a lovely poem about her mum,

She is a beatiful sunny day at the beach that doesnt give you sunburn

She is a beautiful, protective and shiny Doberman that won’t let you get hurt

She is a peice of warm, mouthwatering and sweet chewing gum

She is a beatiful,sparkly and bedazzled T-shirt

She is a shiny sword that has no marks or scratches at all

A lovely one from Toryn

My Mum

She is a hot sunny day at the seaside with a bright sun

She is a joyful and mad black labrador

She is a double dip with lots of fizz

She is a big fluffy dressing gown with a unicorn head on the top

She is a masive grenade with an enormous explosion

Elle’s mum is very special too!

My Mum

My mum is the shining sun that shares the sky with the clouds

She is a spaniel as soft as feathers

She is a fizzy loveheart

My mum is a pink diamond dress in the light

My mum is a crystal sword in action

Michael M has some super images!

My Mum

She is a shining sun in a lovely warm pool with gleaming water

My mum is a fluffy labrador with loads of energy

She is a smooth, crunchy chocolate bar with lots of different flavours

She is a relaxed sparkly jumper with a nice feeling on the inside

She is a colourful sword with a beaming sight with loads of jewellery on the sword

Emma really feels protected!

My mum is a sunny day on the water with the sound of rain

She is a big, fluffy husky that snuggles in bed

Mum is a lollypop that is fizzy and sweet

My mum is a pair of beautiful slippers and a lovely housecoat

She is an epic bow and arrow that helps me and that shoots baddies so they don’t hurt me!

Finlay’s mum will be so pleased with his lovely poem

My Mum

She is a sunny day in summer

She is a dalmatian puppy all spotty and bouncy

She is a big squashy marshmallow

My mum is a long dress all floaty

She is a long spear aiming

Finally we have Kirsty’s gorgeous poem

My Mum

She is a beautiful day of sunflowers

My mum is a collie dog

She is a fizzpop

She is a pair of highish heels

She is a bow and arrow

I particularly love the ‘highish’ heels Kirsty, you made me laugh!

Welcome to Term 3 – The Biggie!

New project: The Scottish Wars of Independence (you may have guessed from the spelling words!)

Term 3 in primary 4 should be very exciting for all concerned. My big hope is to take the children for a day trip to Stirling. It would be a long but worthwhile experience and a great field trip for our project. The Bannockburn Experience is fantastic (although we’re on the waiting list as a school as they’re full for the whole of 2017!) and I definitely would like to climb up the Wallace Tower with the children. We are going to be learning all about that era of Scottish history in class so anyone with any resources or particular expertise, please feel free to let me know.

Apologies for the blogging not being possible last week. I think it was blocked as we were receiving a huge amount of spam.

WATCH THIS SPACE FOR WHAT”S HAPPENING IN THE NEXT EXCITING TERM (‘M WORKING ON IT!)……..IN THE MEANTIME THE CHILDREN HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF PLANNING TO DO ON THE BLOG.They will have to scroll al the way to the bottom of our blog page to leave their comments. They have been asked to write two sentences: one saying a resolution for school work/behaviour; one about a resolution in any other area of their life. We talked about what a resolution was, but you may need to go over it again with them. Thanks!

Have a look at all our fun Christmas activities and have a lovely Christmas and a very happy New Year! See you in 2017

We had a fabulous Christmas party. Thank you sooooooo much for all the lovely food. We had enough for nibbles the next day too!

Huge thanks once again to our helper today at the CCC. We all really enjoyed the Out of the Box show.

A very strange person came to our class! He/she/it is from the mystical world of QUESTOR. I’ll let the children tell you about it but it’s all very strange………….Actually it’s maths problem solving within an imaginary context.

We had a race with our neighbours in primary 5 to see who could make the longest and the prettiest paper chain. The best bit was measuring them out. It was very good for learning cooperation as the teams who were the most organised were definitely quicker!
