Looking Forward to Summer
We have had another Terrific Tuesday today! The highlight of my week! Today we designed some funky glasses and wrote two things we are particularly looking forward to doing in the holidays. We then drew our portrait and added our sunglasses. What a great piece of artwork! It was great to listen to your plans, hopes and dreams for the holidays!
I hope you all have a fabulous summer holiday! Take care and have fun making memories!

We are working as hard as an army of ants!
Today we have been more time telling exercises. We are getting more confident which is fantastic! Keep up the good work and practice at home!
We have also been learning about some of the symbols related to Buddhism and we made these beautiful lotus flowers.
Did you know that the lotus flower represents purity? We learned that the lotus flower grows in muddy waters and that something beautiful can come from something difficult or tricky.
Also today Archie came in and celebrated his success in the trials at the weekend. Well done Archie!
Telling the Time
On Tuesdays we have been practising telling the time. This is a really important skill for us to learn! Some of us have been learning to tell the time using 5 minute intervals e.g. 20 to 4 and 5 past 3. Others of us have been focussing on telling the time using o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past. We are going to try and keep up our practice at home too. Look at the clock and tell an adult the time! The more we practise the more confident time-tellers we will be.
Once we have mastered telling the time, we will be learning to calculate time durations.
PE Games Making
Have you ever heard of the games Badoll or Catchball or Shootball?
We have started a new series in PE where we are working in co-operative groups to create a new game? We have been thinking about what skills we need in our game, what rules will need to be in place to play the game appropriately and how to set our game up. We have come up with some super ideas and have practised the game in our group. Over the next few weeks we will introduce our games to the class so everyone will get to try them out!
Today in science we had an experiment to see what happens when we eat food. We had to mix up breadcrumbs with water and then mash it all up. At the end we had to squeeze all the water out of the mixture – it did not look very nice!

Going Bananas for Fairtrade
Today as part of our RME/ PSD topic of living with others we turned our attention to how we can care for people who live far away from us. We watched a film about banana production and learned that there are five groups of people involved in bringing bananas from the plant to our supermarket. We split into groups to represent each of these groups: the banana workers, the plantation owners, the importers, the shippers and the supermarket buyers. We had to discuss how much we thought each should get paid by banana if a banana cost 15p. Some of us thought that we should split the cost evenly and each group should receive 3p. Others of us thought the job sounded hard and the most important so they should get paid more. We listened well to each other. We were surprised to learn that in a non-fairtrade banana a banana worker would only get 0.5p and that this made things difficult for their family. Perhaps they would not have enough money for decent shelter, food or to pay for education or medical needs. These are all some of our rights as children.
We thought we would lookout for Fairtrade stickers on produce so we can try and care for people who we don’t know across the world.
Each of us has taken a Fairtrade banana home to eat! Enjoy!

Among other things, we measured our handspan, our pencils, the windows, the chairs and the doors in our classroom. We were learning to estimate before we measured so we can get a knowledge and understanding of length. Maybe we could measure some things at home. Who has the longest bed? Who has the tallest plant?
In our Tuesday PE slot we have been learning some netball skills. We have practised different ways to pass the ball: chest pass, bounce pass and shoulder pass. We have also been learning about footwork and pivoting. This has been more of a challenge for us! It’s tricky not to move both feet off the ground! This week we played a caterpillar game, catching the ball and pivoting before passing it on and we also practised our shooting skills.

Article 32 and 36
Thank you to Pr 3/4 for sharing all your interesting work about Child Labour. You told us about your Topic work – Children Long Ago and the kinds of things that children had to do.
In coal mines children would crawl through tunnels too narrow and low for adults. Children also worked as rat catchers, message boys, chimney sweeps, shoe cleaners, or selling matches and some children worked as servants. Working hours were long and conditions were harsh. Children used to eat the scraps of silk that gathered under the machines so that they wouldn’t lose any wages. The death rate among children then was high.
We enjoyed hearing about your learning.
As part of our work for Burns Day next week we had a go at paper weaving our own tartan.
We enjoyed trying out Scottish words on the “Oor Wullie guide tae Scots Language” website.
