Lochardil ECO Team – Let’s Sort It!

WASTE WEEK

The Pod provided some great resources for Waste Week. We have left them up on display around the Assembly Hall for a while longer for everyone to enjoy.

Rice Challenge

We were interested to hear from John Riches from Just Trading Scotland as our guest speaker at a special assembly today. He shared lots of information linked to the Sustainable Development Goals and how we can support some communities by buying their rice. Pr 5 are going to helping us with the 90 kg Rice Challenge. More details to follow soon.

Photo Shoot out and about!

The UNIKIDS team were down at Tulloch Stadium and at Inshes Coop today to develop our community partnerships with Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Fairtrade in Inverness. We hope to share our Global Goals work with Craig from Caley Thistle as part of his input to  match programmes and local newspaper articles. Our Learning for Sustainability work was being photographed by Highland One World Group and IDEAS network (International Development Education Association of Scotland). The images will be used to promote and celebrate our work further. We also hope to try the 90kg Rice Challenge – more on that to come!

We had lots of fun trying to score goals and meeting the players. Thank you to everyone who made us feel so welcome and for the goodies we received from the Coop!

WASTE WEEK March 6th – 10th

Let's Sort It

Our Waste Week got underway with our competition to create something useful out of rubbish! Well done to our winners from Pr 5. Isla made a pencil pot from woven strips of newspaper which she painted with a metallic bronze paint. Abi used an old book to make  a container for something special, secret or precious. Thank you to everyone for such creative items. Keep up the good work with all our recycling actions.

Let's Sort It

Well done to the L.E.T. for a super assembly presentation about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s or Global Goals)

We watched the World’s Largest Lesson and did “What’s Wrong with the World?” quiz. We looked to see if the SDG’s would be a focus to help fix some of the things we suggested. e.g violence – Peace , Justice   Litter – sustainable cities and communities    Girls not going to school – Gender Equality

We shared our rap

The SDG’s

Don’t forget them please

They can change a lot

Make the world a better place

Put a smile on everybody’s face

Let’s give it our best shot.

Remember we can all make a difference if we work together.

Sustainable Development Goals

We meet once  a month in our Citizenship groups to learn about the Sustainable Development Goals and how they link to our rights. This is a new approach from ECO Schools and we are excited to try some new ideas out to refresh our ongoing ECO work.

August – No Poverty  Article 26 You have the right to help from governments if you are poor or in need.

September – Zero Hunger   Good Health and Wellbeing       Article 27 You have the right to food, clothing, a safe place to live and have your basic needs met. You should not be disadvantaged so that you can’t do many of the things other kids can do.

We have received some fabulous books, toys and games which classes can make use of. We appreciate the help given to us from the Parent Council. Reusing items is a good way to save waste.

ECO Activity Week – Thursday

Lots of us had great fun knocking over large cans, playing skittles with old bottles filled with water, playing hoopla with cones and milk carton “rings” and catching a ball in a milk carton! Thank you to the kitchen staff who kindly donated so much of the recycled items we needed for the event.

The Treasure Hunt had mixed success with some pupils not quite understanding the task! Pr 1-3 had to go round the school and count all the green milk bottle tops and report back how many they had found. Some pupils collected them in and this caused confusion!

Pr 4-7 found their hunt more of a challenge. There were 15 letters around the school. They had to note down the letters and rearrange them to make an ECO phrase. Global Footprint was the correct answer! Well done to everyone who joined in.
